About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood, Obey House Tavern is a genuine neighborhood bar that perfectly balances warm local charm with a lively and inviting atmosphere. Located at 1337 Steuben St, this storied tavern brings together generations of patrons with its welcoming vibe, quality comfort food, and a carefully curated selection of drinks that keeps guests coming back for more.

What sets Obey House Tavern apart is not just its history or location, but the care and passion poured into every detail. Owned and operated by locals who live right above the tavern, this place has a deeply authentic feel—a genuine community hub where both the staff and guests feel like family. One of the owners is the talented chef behind the kitchen, which explains the consistently fantastic food that earns glowing reviews from longtime regulars.

The menu is a delightful dive into classically comforting tavern fare, masterfully done. Their Hand Tossed Pizzas stand out with thoughtfully crafted specialty options like “The Pizza Pierce” featuring pepperoni, sausage, onions, mushrooms, and green peppers—a true celebration of hearty, savory goodness. For those favoring fresh veggies, the abundant Veggie Pizza loaded with green peppers, mushrooms, onions, black olives, and tomato is bursting with vibrant flavors and texture, while the Spinach & Feta offers a subtle tang that delights the palate.

Beyond pizza, Obey House Tavern’s Sandwich Board boasts gems like the Philly Steak Hoagie, famously declared the best in Pittsburgh by one enthusiastic diner, and the Terry Cupp Special, a crisp, classic BLT that’s perfectly simple yet deeply satisfying. The gourmet burger selection—including the indulgent Bacon Mushroom Swiss or the spicy Tangy Jalapeño with creamy ranch—is a surefire way to satiate any craving for a fulfilling, juicy meal.

Drinks here are well thought out, with a focus on bottled beers that deliver a great variety without overwhelming the bar’s intimate feel. The cocktail menu features creative highlights like the Whiskey Squirt, which offers a smooth, spirited kick complemented by a playful touch of celery garnish. The tavern also caters thoughtfully to all guests with a no-smoking indoor policy—offering a charming garden space outfitted with picnic tables for those who wish to enjoy a smoke break in fresh air.

Regular patrons lavish praise on Obey House Tavern’s friendly staff, noting how everyone from the bar to the kitchen treats guests like family. The food’s generous portions and freshness are repeatedly applauded—well worth a bit of wait during busy times—reinforcing the sense of care that goes into each dish. The lively presence of local bands on occasion fills the space with energy, elevating the tavern from a simple neighborhood spot to a true community gathering place.

In my view, Obey House Tavern encapsulates what a neighborhood bar should be: a welcoming refuge where great food, well-made drinks, authentic local character, and genuine friendliness come together to create an experience that’s comforting, joyous, and memorable. Whether you’re craving a perfectly crafted pizza, a towering steak hoagie, or just a relaxed evening with friends, Obey House Tavern offers a warm Pittsburgh embrace that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Last really good neighborhood tavern. The owners live upstairs and take good care of the place, and one of the owners is the chef. Food is really pretty good. Especially the pizza. Now no smoking!! Nice place in the back garden for smokers with a picnic table. Bottled beer only, but they've got a good selection. Very reasonably priced.

The sweetest spot with owners & bartenders that treat you like family. The food is fresh, beyond generous portions & despite her being the only cook - it’s well worth the wait if it’s busy. They clearly care about the quality of their food & it shows.

I frequent this particular establishment because the food and environment are phenomenal. The owner cooks fresh food on the daily, and the bartenders are always so nice. Probably one of the best hidden secrets in Pittsburgh. I highly recommend wing, and karaoke nights.

Real life, one of the best gems in PGH!! This food is incredible!! I have never had bad food here! I’ve come here for 3 years and had taco night every night for the past 3 years! Bringing my team and my loved ones! I’m from Arkansas so I’m. A food critic, but this food!!!!! That’s Not the biggest thing. It’s only one chef! She’s the only cook! That’s what makes it such a gem to me! In this moment, I don’t want to take for granted that this is an experience I get to have for as long as she’s able to bless us with her gift? I want to slow down and enjoy my bites more because I don’t want to to for granted the presence of these Wednesdays
